What They’re Watching: Tom Steyer Delivers Closing Argument, Promises To Lower Costs On KTLA
LOS ANGELES — Just days from Election Day, Democratic gubernatorial candidate and climate advocate Tom Steyer is reiterating his central argument: he's the only candidate willing to take on the corporate special interests driving up costs for Californians. The governor's race has narrowed to three people vying for two spots: a MAGA Republican, a corporate Democrat funded by Chevron, Meta, Uber, and other special interest groups, and a progressive changemaker.
The following are excerpts from Tom Steyer’s KTLA interview:
On the the stakes of this race and the choice facing Californians:
“This has been such a complicated race, and it has boiled down to a simple race, which is Steve Hilton, Xavier Becerra, and me. I'm the person in this race who's fighting for working people and who's taking on the corporate special interests. My job is to make sure that I explain why I'm so different from a hard-right MAGA Republican or a corporate Democrat who's taking money from all the biggest corporations in our state, including Chevron.”
On corporations bankrolling Xavier Becerra and spending a record-breaking amount of money against him:
“The corporations and billionaires have spent a record amount of money against me, the most money ever spent to try and stop a candidate in any race in California, and that is a very simple reflection of the fact that they're making an investment in their future profits. They know that I'm the person who wants single-payer [healthcare], they know I'm the person who's taking on the electric monopolies and the oil companies, they know that I'm the person representing change in California.”
…And the working Californians those standing with him:
“There are a group of billionaires and huge corporations who absolutely are against me, and that the people are for me are the working people, the nurses, the teachers, the people who work in restaurants and hotels, who are home care workers and childcare workers, that's what this race is about, and that's all I'm focused on for the next five days.”
