What They’re Seeing: As Campaign Surges, Steyer Doubles Down on Affordability Message
Steyer joined KTLA and ABC7 to discuss the most pressing issues facing working people and his future plans for California
LOS ANGELES – In case you missed it, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer appeared on KTLA and ABC 7 in Los Angeles this week to discuss his plans to tackle California’s affordability crisis by making corporations pay their fair share, enacting single-payer health care, and standing up to Trump.
On affordability being the central focus of his campaign:
“The basis of my campaign is affordability, that Californians can't afford to live in California anymore, and I think the subtext is that working people have been getting the shaft for over 40 years here. It's time for that to change.” (KTLA)
On why we must move to single-payer health care:
“What we've seen is continued escalation of health care costs. They're eating up every family in this state, every business in this, and we can see that single-payer, where it's instituted, provides at least as good health care, or better, at half the cost." (ABC 7)
On the housing crisis:
“We need to build a lot more houses, a lot more cheaply, and I'm for rent control, because honestly, the fact that we've been unable to build houses to meet the demand has meant that the people who are renting are bidding against each other and the prices of houses are skyrocketing… We need rent control, and we need to build a lot of houses.” (KTLA)
On focusing on housing and health care — the two biggest drivers of affordability:
“If we can control housing costs, and if we can control health care costs, that is going to make this a much easier place to do business." (ABC 7)
On standing up to Trump:
“He's running a criminal administration, and he is coming for us because we stand for something different. So my job as Governor will be to make sure that California succeeds, stands up for our values and shows the world that this is the alternative to this corrupt, dangerous regime.” (KTLA)
On what California will look like 10 years from now under “Governor Steyer”:
“We continue to be the entrepreneurial state that imagines and builds the future, but now we share it fairly. We have a top 10 educational system, and we really do a great job at educating our kids for the future. We have a healthcare system that is much less expensive, but where healthcare is a right for everyone. It is a place where, in fact, we have shared prosperity. That is my goal and it is absolutely within our power. We have to get it done.” (KTLA)
