Influential labor union represents 300,000 workers throughout the United States and Canada
SAN FRANCISCO – Today, UNITE HERE International Union, UNITE HERE Local 2 (Bay Area), UNITE HERE Local 11 (Los Angeles & Orange County), UNITE HERE Local 19 (San Jose, Fresno-Yosemite, Bakersfield, Monterey, Carmel), UNITE HERE Local 30 (San Diego) and UNITE HERE Local 49 (Sacramento) announced its endorsement of Democratic gubernatorial candidate and climate advocate Tom Steyer. The labor union represents 300,000 hotel, gaming, food service, manufacturing, textile, distribution, laundry, transportation, and airport industries workers.
“We are proud to announce our endorsement of Tom Steyer for governor of California. We represent sixty thousand workers in hotels, airports, universities, convention centers, and tribal casinos across this state,” UNITE HERE! said. “From them, we hear how hard it is to support themselves and their families in the face of rising prices. We need a governor who is going to fight for affordable housing, tackle the crisis of unaffordable health care, fight Big Oil to stop rising prices at the gas tank, and resist federal overreach around immigration enforcement. Tom Steyer has pledged to do all those things while also investing in keeping union jobs strong. Tom has a track record of pushing for corporate accountability by championing environmental protections and limiting corporate influence in electoral politics.”
“UNITE HERE! embodies the democratic principles and fighting spirit that have always defined our country’s labor movement,” Steyer said. “I am deeply honored to have the trust of its members, whose work continues the legacy of generations of workers who built a better life through collective action. As governor, I look forward to working with UNITE HERE! to ensure California always puts working people first, prioritizing policies that lower costs and deliver real opportunity for the people who keep the state running.”
UNITE HERE! joins a long list of unions, including the California Federation of Labor Unions AFL-CIO, SEIU California, the California Nurses Association (CNA), the United Domestic Workers (UDW), the California Teachers Association (CTA), the California Federation of Teachers (CFT), the California School Employees Association (CSEA), AFSCME 329, the California Attorneys in State Employment (CASE), the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada (IATSE), and the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers Local 21 (IFPTE Local 21), all of which stand with Steyer.
