Former State Senate Leader and Speaker of the California State Assembly throws support behind Steyer’s campaign
SACRAMENTO – Today, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer announced he received the endorsement of Senate President pro Tempore Emeritus Toni G. Atkins, the first person in 150 years to lead both houses of the California Legislature and a former gubernatorial candidate:
"I’m proud to support Tom Steyer for Governor of California,” Atkins said. “Tom has the vision and experience to keep our economy strong while taking on our toughest challenges, from housing affordability to accessing health care. He has also dedicated himself to advancing justice — fighting poverty, tackling the climate crisis, and working to ensure every child can count on a free school meal. Having led both houses of the state legislature, I know what it takes to work in true partnership to get things done. California needs a governor who is both principled and effective, and Tom Steyer is that leader.“
“Toni Atkins isn’t just a fighter — she’s one of the most respected and accomplished leaders in our state’s history,” Steyer said. “Throughout her career, she has led with courage, conviction, and an unwavering commitment to the people she serves. From championing women’s rights and LGBTQ equality to advancing affordable housing, protecting working families, and establishing the state’s rainy day fund, Toni has delivered real results that touch the lives of millions. Her leadership is admired across the state, and her support is a true honor for me.”
The endorsement comes directly after California Federation of Labor Unions, AFL-CIO, AFSCME 3299, the largest union representing University of California employees, and California Federation of Teachers endorsed Steyer over the weekend. Toni Atkins joins the long list of support Steyer has earned since the launch of his campaign, which also includes the United Domestic Workers, California School Employees Association, the California Nurses Association, as well as Congressman Ro Khanna, Senator Henry Stern, and Assemblymembers Mia Bonta, Isaac Bryan, Gregg Hart, Ash Kalra, Alex Lee, Chris Ward, and Rick Chavez Zbur.
