The Numbers That Defined the Governor’s Race This Week
3 candidates, 2 spots, with just over 1 week to go before the election – and Steyer has the momentum
CALIFORNIA — This past week, the contrast in this race became undeniable. While special interests have spent record amounts trying to stop Tom Steyer, Xavier Becerra has banked millions from Meta, Chevron, and Uber — the same corporations that want a friend in Sacramento to help them keep prices high. Here are the numbers voters need to see before June 2.
0: Policy positions Xavier Beceerra was able to articulate when asked directly by CNN for any "specific policy” he would change.
8,000: employees laid off by Meta just hours after they cut a $950,000 donation to back Becerra.
$49.5 million: Dollars from corporate special interests to boost Xavier Becerra as their champion, including $500,000 from Chevron, $950,000 from Meta, $1,000,000 from Uber, $500,000 from McDonalds, $1,000,000 from Airbnb – all to elect Becerra, who they know will protect their profits and allow them to keep prices high for California families.
60-80: cents more per gallon that Becerra-backing Chevron is overcharging Californians at the pump this weekend.
…5: times Xavier Becerra denied taking money from Chevron in an interview with KMPH-Fresno’s Dania Romero – despite accepting a maximum contribution.
46th: President of the United States – Joe Biden – who declined to endorse his former HHS Secretary Becerra. Not surprising given the over two dozen former colleagues who have spoken out about his failure to lead in times of crisis.
3,000: number of fake social media accounts engaging in pro-Becerra messaging – responsible for generating over 1.3 million views and 42,000 engagements through coordinated inauthentic behavior.
Meanwhile…
9: cities Steyer has visited in just this last week, connecting with voters and answering their questions (even the tough ones) – including Burbank, Carson, Firebaugh, Fresno, Lemoore, Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, and Santa Maria.
1,275: minutes (that’s 21.25 hours!): Steyer spent talking to voters since last Sunday. Whether it was a Carpenters rally in Carson or a coffee with Ventura Democrats or in-depth podcast interviews with Jessica Yellin, Higher Learning, I’ve Had It, and Brian Tyler Cohen, as well as local news outlets up and down the state, Steyer is prioritizing meeting and reaching out to voters in every corner of the state.
600+: people who packed the IATSE Local 80 town hall, where Steyer kicked off his closing argument to take on special interests and lower costs for working Californians.
66: years of combined service from Steyer endorsers California State Controller Betty Yee and Former California State Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins, who held a press conference this past week, where Atkins said, “I know all of the candidates in the race. I talked to every single candidate before I made a decision. Tom Steyer is different, I trust him.”
