Steyer for Governor Campaign Launches “Corrupt or Incompetent?” Website Examining Xavier Becerra’s Record
New microsite details pattern of ethical questions, corporate influence, and failed leadership throughout Becerra’s career
SAN FRANCISCO — Today, Steyer for Governor campaign launched a new microsite examining the public record of Xavier Becerra and asking a simple question Californians deserve answered:
Is Xavier Becerra corrupt or incompetent?
In the wake of yet another of Becerra’s top aides pleading guilty to federal fraud charges, more questions continue to surface about what Becerra knew about the illegal payments being made from his campaign account – and when he knew it.
The website walks through Becerra’s political career and documents a pattern of ethical controversies, corporate influence, weak leadership, and political failure at nearly every stage of his decades in office. Highlights include:
- Becerra’s reversal on single-payer healthcare to win a powerful anti-single-payer lobby’s endorsement (and maximum contribution)
- Taking a maximum campaign contribution from Chevron because he “[needs] Chevron”
- Corruption scandal involving former top aides and evidence showing Becerra’s involvement and weak management
- His failure to aggressively pursue accountability for fossil fuel companies accused of misleading the public on climate change
- Widespread criticism of his leadership as Secretary of Health and Human Services during major national crises
The site argues that Californians cannot afford another governor beholden to corporate interests, utility money, Big Oil influence, or the political status quo in Sacramento.
“Californians are facing massive challenges — from skyrocketing utility bills and healthcare costs to the climate crisis,” Steyer for Governor spokesperson Amelia Platt said. “Voters deserve a governor who will stand up to special interests, not someone who will accommodate them, or will look the other way when things get hard.”
