New report uncovers coordinated smear campaign involving more than 3,100 fake accounts
CALIFORNIA — In case you missed it, a new independent analysis by digital intelligence firm Cyabra uncovered a massive coordinated fake-account operation amplifying Xavier Becerra across X, Facebook, and Instagram while simultaneously attacking Tom Steyer.
The analysis identified more than 3,100 fake accounts responsible for generating over 1.3 million views and 42,000 engagements through coordinated inauthentic behavior designed to manipulate public opinion in California’s gubernatorial race. The operation relied on synchronized posting, copycat messaging, and networks of fake profiles elevating Becerra-related narratives.
“This coordinated network of fake accounts was either run by Becerra’s campaign or outside groups and political allies working to help him,” Steyer for Governor spokesperson Kevin Liao said. “Californians deserve answers. Xavier Becerra cannot continue benefiting from bot-driven political manipulation while refusing to condemn it. Becerra should demand that any supporters or allied groups involved shut them down immediately. Silence is unacceptable.”
The activity indicated a coordinated inauthentic operation across platforms rather than organic online behavior. X served as the primary driver, accounting for 67 percent of all identified fake accounts and more than 1 million views, making it the central engine of amplification and reach.
According to the report, X served as the primary engine of the operation, with more than 2,100 fake accounts amplifying hostile narratives attacking Steyer’s candidacy, character, and political positions. Similar coordinated activity appeared on Facebook and Instagram, where fake profiles aggressively pushed pro-Becerra content while boosting anti-Steyer messaging.
The use of fake accounts and coordinated bot networks is one of the most corrosive tactics in modern politics, including during the 2016 election, when Russian-linked social media influence operations sought to manipulate online political discourse and amplify division around Donald Trump’s candidacy.
