Steyer Applauds Social Media Addiction Verdict in Landmark Trial
“We cannot allow corporate profits to come at the expense of our children’s well-being.”
LOS ANGELES — Today, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer commended the ruling in K.G.M. v. Meta et al., which found Instagram and YouTube liable in the historic social media addiction trial.
“Today’s ruling is a big win for Americans, showing that accountability matters and that the voices of everyday people can make a difference,” Steyer said. “It is unacceptable that billionaires are profiting from products that harm our kids, and we cannot allow corporate profits to come at the expense of our children’s well-being. We need to ban social media for children under 16. The evidence linking these platforms to young people's mental health issues is too clear.”
This month, Steyer announced his AI plan to position the state to lead the next era of innovation, while putting guardrails in place to protect working people and communities. Steyer prioritizes protecting workers and families — including requiring data centers to pay their own way — ensuring Californians share in AI-driven wealth through a Golden State Sovereign Wealth Fund, and keeping California the global innovation leader.
