Sonoma County Conservation Action Throws Support behind Tom Steyer in Race for California Governor
Grassroots environmental group joins growing coalition of climate organizations backing Steyer’s campaign
SAN FRANCISCO – Today, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer won the endorsement of Sonoma County Conservation Action, a grassroots environmental advocacy group. Since 1991, the group has utilized door-to-door canvassers to engage people in one-on-one dialogue and educate them about current environmental issues and environmentally progressive candidates.
“Sonoma County Conservation Action is proud to be in strong support of Tom Steyer for Governor,” President of Sonoma County Conservation Action Neal Fishman said. Other candidates’ campaign rhetoric on climate change, land conservation, coastal protection and transit oriented housing may sound fine. But Tom has been concentrating on all aspects of environmental protection for over fifteen years and has spent millions of his own money to keep these issues in the forefront of California and national politics. Our endorsement is based on the extraordinary actions of a committed environmentalist, not just words. Under Tom’s leadership California will remain one of the major forces worldwide for a healthy environment and for a future that is not the climate nightmare that now haunts the dreams of younger generations. Our endorsement is for them.”
“Grassroots organizers like those at Sonoma County Conservation Action understand the urgent need for clean energy and do the essential work of engaging with and advocating for their communities,” Steyer said. “I’m grateful for their partnership and look forward to working together to restore affordability, strengthen wildfire resilience, and cut utility rates by 25 percent for the residents of Sonoma County and across California. Together, we can build a cleaner, more reliable energy system that puts people over profits.”
Sonoma County Conservation Action joins a long list of environmental endorsements for Tom Steyer for Governor, including Jane Fonda Climate PAC, TH!RD ACT, the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund, the Climate Center Action Fund, the NRDC Action Fund, and California Environmental Voters. The endorsement also comes on the heels of writer and climate activist Rebecca Solnit announcing her support for “climate champion” Steyer in a recent essay.
