Leading national environmental organization backs Steyer, highlighting his long-standing climate advocacy
SAN FRANCISCO – Today, Sierra Club, one of the most enduring and influential grassroots environmental organizations in the United States, announced its support for climate advocate Tom Steyer for California Governor. For over 130 years, the Sierra Club has sued corporate giants, mobilized people nationwide, and helped keep public lands public. It has supported landmark laws like the Clean Air Act and protected hundreds of millions of acres — including through the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. Their endorsement further underscores Steyer’s position as the only candidate who will fight back against harmful corporations driving climate change.
“Coming from an environmental justice background, I know our communities cannot afford empty promises,” Miguel Miguel, Director of Sierra Club California said. “We need a governor with the strength to stand up to those who are trying to destroy our communities and the record to deliver proven results. Tom Steyer is the choice because he understands that climate action must protect the people who have been hit first and worst by the climate crisis.”
“The Sierra Club represents the highest standard of climate leadership in our nation’s history, and I am deeply honored to receive their endorsement. Their tireless work to protect our public lands, waters, and wildlife has paved the way for environmental advocacy across the country,” Steyer said. “I have long looked to them as I’ve pursued my own climate work. Their leadership in environmental protection, growth, and education is the gold standard.”
A decades-long climate advocate, Steyer has been at the forefront of numerous environmental efforts, including defending California’s cap-and-trade program, spearheading campaigns against the Keystone XL pipeline and other federal fossil fuel projects, and helping pass Proposition 39, the Clean Energy Jobs Act.
The Sierra Club joins a long list of Steyer’s environmental endorsements including: Climate Action California, Third Act, Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund, and The Jane Fonda Climate PAC. To see the full list of Steyer’s endorsements, click here.
