SAN FRANCISCO – Today, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer received the endorsement of Secure AI Project (SAIP). The organization sponsored California’s SB 53, which was the first-in-the-nation legislation to regulate AI companies’ management of catastrophic risks, such as cyberattacks on critical infrastructure and biological weapons.
“We are proud to endorse Tom Steyer for governor because we think he’s California’s best hope for making sure AI benefits the public and California continues to lead,” Nick Beckstead, Co-Founder and CEO of Secure AI Project said. “He is the single candidate in the race who has put out an explicit AI policy plan. And he’s committed to the key policies: mandatory safety testing before going to market, mandatory minimum safety standards, and a sovereign wealth fund to share the economic benefits of AI. He is ready to stand up to large tech companies in order to get this done, and is bringing in top experts to make sure he gets the details right.”
“California has shown the world what AI can do, and as governor, I will ensure working people get to benefit from that innovation,” Steyer said. “I’m grateful for the Secure AI Project’s endorsement and their commitment to increasing transparency and safeguarding Californians from risk. My AI plan ensures all people of this state profit from the AI boom. Together, we can build an economy where progress and fairness move together.”
While other candidates are being bank-rolled by Big Tech, Steyer is the only candidate with a clear plan to regulate AI, including a detailed plan to rein in Big Tech. Tom Steyer announced a bold AI agenda to keep California at the forefront of innovation while protecting workers, families, and children — and guaranteeing that the benefits of AI contribute to shared prosperity across the state.
