SAN FRANCISCO — As first reported in POLITICO, the Steyer campaign is releasing
a new digital video titled “So Which Is It?”, which uses Xavier Becerra’s own words against him to expose his deep ties to a corrupt political machine and his systemic lack of oversight.
Becerra’s former top adviser faces nearly two dozen federal corruption charges and is discussing a possible plea deal as of last week. His former chief of staff also pleaded guilty to stealing $225,000 from a Becerra campaign account.
Becerra’s story has drastically shifted in face of increasing pressure: in November 2025, Becerra claimed he was fully aware of the illegal payments, saying “I was aware the payments were made… I had authorized them…”
But more recently, in an April 18 interview, Becerra changed his tune to say he had no knowledge, saying “I didn’t oversee” the payments to his own top advisors.
“So which is it?” asks the narrator.
“Becerra needs to take accountability for changing his story repeatedly and refusing to take responsibility for failed leadership. A pattern of mismanagement has followed him from job to job, and when things go wrong, he points fingers instead of fixing problems,” said Steyer for Governor spokesperson Danni Wang. “Whether it’s single-payer or hiding from his ties to corruption, Becerra will change his tune whenever it is most convenient for himself.”
Becerra isn’t just lying when it comes to the corruption in his campaign. On Friday, KQED broke the story that Becerra told the California Medical Association in a closed-door lobbyist meeting that he didn’t support single payer, after publicly proclaiming his support for the measure to supporters on the campaign trail and on his campaign website.
