NEW AD: Tom Steyer Highlights Record Taking on Corporations
SAN FRANCISCO — Today, Tom Steyer’s gubernatorial campaign released a new ad that introduced voters to Steyer’s life story, including his successful campaigns to levy taxes on out-of-state corporations. The ad comes as prominent labor organizations representing nurses and school employees recently backed Steyer for governor and billionaires and powerful special interests are lining up behind the latest entrant into the race, Matt Mahan. Steyer has called for higher taxes on billionaires and corporations in the state, in order to make pre-school and community college free and invest in other critical programs for Californians.
The ad, “Gets It Done,” specifically refers to Steyer's past efforts on ballot measures that have raised billions of dollars from large corporations for Californians’ health care and public schools. In 2012, Steyer was the leading sponsor of Proposition 39, which closed a corporate tax loophole to support energy-efficiency upgrades to California schools, saving schools $66.3 million annually and creating 19,000 clean energy jobs across the state. Steyer also led the successful campaign to defeat Proposition 23, a 2010 ballot initiative backed by Texas oil companies that sought to roll back California’s signature clean air and climate law.
Below is the transcript for “Gets It Done.”
The son of a school teacher and Navy veteran, he built an industry-leading company, right here in California.
And he walked away from it.
Tom Steyer.
Pledging to give away half of everything he earned to charity, and fight for Californians.
So, when out-of-state corporations were ripping us off, Tom led the fight for Prop 39, and won.
Earning California billions of dollars for our schools and communities.
And it doesn’t cost you a nickel.
And he didn’t stop there.
