Jared Huffman, Climate Action California’s Janet Cox: Becerra’s “Bromance with Chevron and Big Oil Oligarchs”
Say Steyer is “fighting back against an out-of-state oil company” driving up prices
CALIFORNIA — On a press call today, Congressman Jared Huffman and Climate Action California’s Janet Cox called out the special interests, specifically Big Oil, who are spending record breaking amounts against Tom Steyer, the only viable progressive in the race. The call comes just hours after special interest spending against Steyer topped a whopping $51 million.
Huffman called out his former colleague, Becerra, for failing — both as Attorney General and in his campaign — to take on the oil giants driving prices through the roof for Californians:
“I served with Xavier for many years in Congress. He is not a bad guy, but there were times, as our Attorney General, when he pulled punches, when I think he should have fought harder against the fossil fuel industry, and frankly, this ‘we need Chevron’ thing is very disturbing to me. This is not a moment for a bromance with Chevron and the big oil oligarchs. It's just not. It's a moment with Americans trapped on this fossil fuel roller coaster, paying over $6 a gallon for gas in California. [...] This is a moment to fight back harder than ever against the fossil fuel oligarchs, Chevron being one of the worst.”
“Our economy is in the grip of this oligarchy, and this stranglehold is largely driven by the fossil fuel industry, with some help from big tech oligarchs and crypto bros, and a few others.
“So when I see what is going on here in California — and bear in mind California is probably one of the biggest players in deciding whether the Trump agenda is stopped, whether we can get this country back on the rails — when I see this cesspool of special interest money flooding in try to stop Tom Steyer from being governor, that is just another very clarifying factor in why I'm with Tom.”
Cox pointed out the record-breaking spending against Steyer as Becerra keeps cozying up to big oil:
“We have seen Becerra double down on his comfort with Chevron and the rest of the oil industry, which is putting incredible amounts of money into his campaign as independent expenditures specifically opposing Tom Steyer.”
“If ever there was a time for make polluters pay, this is it, and it's just a huge relief to hear Tom Steyer saying that he's in favor of that.”
