Jane Fonda Climate PAC Endorses Tom Steyer for California Governor
JanePAC, started by activist, philanthropist, and Academy Award-winning actor Jane Fonda, throws its support behind the Democratic gubernatorial candidate
SAN FRANCISCO– Today, Democratic California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer received the endorsement of long-time climate activist Jane Fonda’s Climate PAC. Steyer is a dedicated environmental activist who has pledged to hold the fossil fuel industry and utilities monopoly accountable.
“We are facing two existential crises: the climate crisis and the democracy crisis,” said Jane Fonda, Founder of Jane Fonda Climate PAC. “Here in California, we’re watching our communities and our state’s natural beauty being threatened in real time while Big Oil and corporate power tighten their grip on politics. We need leaders with the tenacity to tackle these crises head-on. That’s why I’m endorsing Tom Steyer for Governor of California.
“Tom is the clear climate champion in this race,” said Fonda. “He’s spent years taking on the fossil fuel industry, advancing renewable energy, and fighting for a livable future. He knows you can’t solve the climate crisis without taking on corruption in our politics, and he won’t hesitate to stand up to Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies. It’s make-or-break for California, and Tom Steyer will bring the bold leadership this moment demands.”
“Jane has been a tireless leader in the fight for climate and environmental justice, standing up to the Trump administration and those before it, and I am deeply grateful to Jane Fonda for her support,” Steyer said. “Now is the time to protect our hard-won climate victories, and as governor, I will confront these challenges head-on. I have dedicated my career to the climate movement as an activist, philanthropist, and business leader, and I will not back down. Most importantly, I will make the polluters pay — holding those responsible for destroying our planet accountable and creating a cleaner future for all.”
In 2010, Steyer defended California’s landmark emissions reduction legislation (Cap and Trade), working with labor and environmental justice allies to defeat Big Oil, and in 2025, he rallied public support to secure its reauthorization, helping deliver over $28 billion in funding for clean energy, infrastructure, and well-paying California jobs over the past decade. He was co-chair and chief backer of Proposition 39, contributing $29.6 million to pass the measure which raised over $1.7 billion. The policy was designed to ensure the revenue was earmarked for school energy retrofits, creating union jobs.
