“Right now, this week, we have seen big oil companies weaponizing their monopoly power amid the Iran War, and using it to price gouge Californians.”
“We need change”
LOS ANGELES — Yesterday, Democratic gubernatorial candidate and climate activist Tom Steyer was joined by Academy Award-winning actor and activist Jane Fonda and Doug Moore, Executive Director of the United Domestic Workers of America (UDW), to fight back against corporate influence in Sacramento – emphasizing Steyer is the only candidate for governor who can make state government work for working people, not special interests, who are now spending over $26 million against Steyer.
This conflict intensified this week as Steyer's campaign filed a complaint with the California Fair Political Practices Commission, alleging PG&E illegally funneled $8 million to conceal its identity in anti-Steyer ads, seeing him as an "existential threat" to its profits.
Meanwhile, Xavier Becerra, Chevron’s preferred candidate, said earlier this week that he would be open to increasing drilling in California – as Chevron continues to price gouge Californians at the pump. Becerra accepted a maximum contribution from the Big Oil giant earlier this cycle.
“The stakes of this election are California for Corporations, or California for Californians,” said Tom Steyer. “California needs independence from the corporate interests that have their hands around our throat. I'm calling for an independent California, not bought and paid for by powerful interest, but a California that truly serves working.”
“Big money interests that are funding [Steyer’s] opponent know that he will not count out to them. They know that he will stand up to big oil and make California healthier and safer for Californians, said Jane Fonda. “The forces that are against Tom Steyer are the forces who are colluding with the Trump administration to restrict our rights, make our lives more expensive, poison our planet for a quick buck.”
“We need a leader who can't be bought. and who will stand up for all Californians. And that's why UDW is standing shoulder to shoulder with Tom Steyer today,” said Doug Moore, Executive Director of the United Domestic Workers of America.
