Tom Steyer: My Plan to Make California Affordable Again
First up: Bust the utility monopolies.
November 30, 2025
“California is the best state in the country to start and grow a business. That must never change. The reason so many Californians are struggling to afford to stay here is that we’ve coddled powerful interests for too long. To use one example, we’ve let utilities, backed by armies of lobbyists in Sacramento, raise customers’ electricity bills while earning government-guaranteed, double-digit returns.
[...]
“When I’m governor, I’ll break up the utility monopolies and reduce electric bills by 25%. That’s only the start. I’ll also launch the largest effort in state history to build homes that middle-class families can afford and reduce costs for everyone. I’ll ban corporate PAC money from state elections so that our public policy starts supporting people instead of special interests. And when President Trump and his MAGA allies try to kick millions of Americans off their insurance, I’ll fight back to keep healthcare affordable in the Golden State.
“Like millions of others, I owe whatever success I’ve had in life to the great state of California. That’s why I’ve dedicated so much of my time, effort and, yes, money, to making the best state in the country even better. It’s why I’m not stopping until every Californian family can afford to work, live and thrive in the place we’re proud to call home.”
