GET THE FACTS: Steyer Only Candidate Unbought By Wealthy, Powerful Interests
SAN FRANCISCO — During tonight’s first televised gubernatorial debate, Tom Steyer addressed opponents who have spent years in politics currying favor with monied interests in exchange for campaign contributions.
“Unlike others on the stage who take money from powerful special interests, Tom Steyer has spent years taking them on at the ballot box — and winning,” Steyer for Governor spokesperson Kevin Liao said. “While Silicon Valley and tech billionaires are lining up behind Matt Mahan, Californians need a governor with the independence, vision, and backbone to stand up to entrenched interests and deliver real tax fairness.”
Steyer has called on corporations and billionaires like himself to pay more in taxes – something few of his opponents have the courage to do – in order to address economic inequalities in the state and raise revenue for education, housing, health care, and other key programs Californians rely on. He’s also earned the endorsements of the California School Employees Association and California Nurses Association — two unions representing tens of thousands of working people.
