Chevron’s $500,000 Plan to Keep $6 Gas: Xavier Becerra
Steyer campaign deploys mobile billboards in Fresno and Los Angeles to call out Chevron’s price gouging – and their chosen candidate, Xavier Becerra
CALIFORNIA — Millions of Californians hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend will pay some of the highest gas prices ever recorded – above $6 a gallon, more than a dollar above the national average. Chevron is taking a step further and charging its customers 60-80¢ more per gallon.
These prices soar as just as Chevron wrote a $500,000 check to support Xavier Becerra – and the Steyer campaign is making sure voters know about it.
Today, mobile billboards will be activated in Fresno and Los Angeles to broadcast Becerra’s own words about the oil giant loud and clear: “You need Chevron, I need Chevron…They’re not the bad guy”.

“Chevron is charging Californians $6 a gallon with one hand and writing Xavier Becerra a $500,000 check with the other,” said Steyer for Governor spokesperson Danni Wang. “As Attorney General, Becerra failed to go after Big Oil, and Chevron knows they'll have a friend in Sacramento. Tom won't be.”
Becerra “stayed mum” on an investigation into ExxonMobil as Attorney General, and in this race, took a maximum contribution from Chevron, and came out in support of increasing oil drilling in California – all efforts supported by the Big Oil consortium that continues to spend millions on electing Becerra.
In contrast, Steyer has spent over a decade taking on Big Oil and winning. He fought for and won nearly $2 billion for clean energy in schools. Steyer has released a robust plan to bring down costs for California families by expanding clean energy innovation and making polluters pay.
Tom is endorsed by prominent climate experts and environmental champions, including: Sierra Club, California Environmental Voters, Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund, Bill McKibben, and Jane Fonda.
