Steyer Secures Additional Key Endorsement from Leading Environmental Advocates
SACRAMENTO— Today, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer received the endorsements of the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund (CBDAF) and Third Act Initiative. Third Act Initiative is the social welfare arm of Third Act, a climate and democracy advocacy group that mobilizes Americans over the age of sixty. CBDAF is the social welfare arm of the Center for Biological Diversity, which works to protect the environment and the species that inhabit it.
This announcement follows the release of the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund’s environmental scorecard, which evaluates the five leading candidates for California governor on environmental issues. Tom Steyer was the only candidate to earn an A, while Eric Swalwell received a D+ for failing to make polluters pay and hold Big Oil accountable”
“California must continue to lead the world’s clean energy transition while enhancing environmental protection, and that’s why the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund is endorsing Tom Steyer,” said Kassie Siegel, California political director at the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund. “If you want a governor who will protect our climate, air, water and wildlife, he’s the best choice. And if you want a governor who will lower your bills by standing up to the oil industry and utilities sticking us with high prices and filthy fossil fuels, vote for Tom Steyer.”
“Tom Steyer has earned the overwhelming support of the three California Third Act Working Groups because of his decades tackling the existential threat of climate change, the core focus of Third Act,” said Martha Sellers, co-facilitator of the Bay Area Third Act Working Group. “Third Act recognizes Tom's decades of commitment to passing landmark climate legislation and his support of nonprofit environmental advocacy organizations, especially for youth. We believe he has the energy, passion, and expertise to be the climate champion California needs.”
“At a time when federal leadership has faltered and critical climate protections have been undermined, California needs a governor who will step up and lead,” said Steyer. “By investing in clean technologies, we can protect our planet, strengthen California’s position as a climate leader, and create more good-paying jobs for people across our state. I’m honored to receive the endorsements of the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund and Third Act Initiative, and I look forward to working with them to advance bold solutions together.”
For over 15 years, Tom has been at the forefront of the climate movement as an activist, philanthropist, and business leader. In 2010, he worked with allies across labor and environmental justice communities to defeat Big Oil and successfully defend California’s landmark emissions reduction legislation, Cap and Trade. In 2025, he rallied the public to help secure its reauthorization, which has delivered over $28 billion in funding for clean energy, clean infrastructure, and well-paying California jobs over the past decade.
In 2012, Tom was co-chair and chief backer of Proposition 39, contributing $29.6 million to pass the measure, which has since raised over $1.7 billion. The policy ensured that the revenue was earmarked for school energy retrofits, creating union jobs. Since launching his campaign, Steyer has also earned endorsements from other environmental groups, including the Climate Action Center Fund, California Environmental Voters, and NRDC Action Fund.
