California Federation of Labor Supports Tom Steyer for Governor
SACRAMENTO – In a major show of support, the California Federation of Labor voted last night to endorse Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer, representing 1,300 unions and 2.3 million workers statewide. Steyer released the following statement reacting to the news:
“I’m deeply honored to be among the candidates to earn the endorsement of the California Federation of Labor,” Steyer said. “This support represents the backbone of our state, and I’m proud to stand with them, along with the nurses, health care workers, home care workers, educators, custodians, and school employees that power our campaign.”
“Together, we’re sounding the alarm: too many hardworking Californians can no longer afford to live in the state they built. These are the people who care for our sick, educate our children, and keep our communities running, and yet they’re being pushed to the brink. That has to change.”
“This campaign is about fighting for them and restoring the promise that if you work hard in California, you can afford to live and build a future here.”
The endorsement comes directly after AFSCME 3299, the largest union representing University of California employees, and California Federation of Teachers endorsed Steyer over the weekend. California Federation of Labor joins the long list of support Steyer has earned since the launch of his campaign, which includes the AFSCME 3299, California Federation of Teachers, United Domestic Workers, California School Employees Association, the California Nurses Association, as well as Congressman Ro Khanna, Senator Henry Stern, and Assemblymembers Mia Bonta, Isaac Bryan, Gregg Hart, Ash Kalra, Alex Lee, Chris Ward, and Rick Chavez Zbur.
