His attempts to lie about the $500,000 check to back his campaign makes it clear that Xavier Becerra is on defense over corporate contributions
CALIFORNIA — Xavier Becerra is hoping that Californians aren’t paying too much attention to the news this weekend, as one of his campaign’s top donors, Chevron, is making waves for price gouging Californians at the pump.
This weekend, Becerra told KMPH it was an “outright lie” that Chevron is giving him money. Alas, here are the receipts:

Chevron cut the independent expenditure that solely exists to support Becerra a $500,000 check last week

Becerra’s campaign cashed a max out donation from Chevron in June 2025
You’re going to want to hold onto these as Becerra continues to deflect and deceive voters to distance himself from the Texas-based oil giant.
“To use Becerra’s own words, it’s an ‘outright lie’ that he’s telling about who supports his campaign: he and Chevron are one and the same,” said Steyer for Governor spokesperson Danni Wang. “Chevron and corporate special interests keep jacking up prices on California families, and are banking on Becerra to keep it that way. California families need real change, and the only person who can deliver that is Tom Steyer.”
As Attorney General, Becerra “stayed mum” on an investigation into ExxonMobil. In this campaign, he also backed increasing oil drilling in California and continues benefiting from millions in corporate-backed outside spending.
In contrast, Steyer has spent over a decade taking on Big Oil and winning. He fought for and won nearly $2 billion for clean energy in schools. Steyer has released a robust plan to bring down costs for California families by expanding clean energy innovation and making polluters pay.
Tom is endorsed by prominent climate experts and environmental champions, including: Sierra Club, California Environmental Voters, Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund, Bill McKibben, and Jane Fonda.
