Sacramento, CA — Today, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer announced AFSCME 3299 endorsed his campaign for governor. The organization represents more than 40,000 service workers, patient care technical workers, skilled craft workers, and more at the University of California’s 10 campuses, five medical centers, numerous clinics, research laboratories, and UC Hastings College of Law. AFSCME 3299 President Michael Avant released the following statement:
“Tom Steyer has made the pursuit of justice and shared prosperity for all Californians his life's work,” Avant said. “He's taken on big corporations and big polluters. He walks the talk, free of the big money interests who so often block progress. He's centered his campaign on making our state more affordable and more responsive to the needs of working people and has consistently stood up to Donald Trump's corrupt assault on California's values.”
“Because of his strong progressive record and his independence from big donor influence, we know Tom Steyer will be a leader who holds the University of California accountable to its core public mission. He'll stand up for students, patients and the rights of the frontline workers who care for them, knowing that UC can do better. And so can California. That's why the members of AFSCME Local 3299 are proud to endorse Tom Steyer for California Governor."
“I’m deeply honored to receive the endorsement of the hardworking members of AFSCME 3299 — the workers who power the University of California every day,” Steyer said. “Their dedication makes one of California’s most respected public institutions possible. As governor, I’ll proudly stand with them to protect the progress they’ve fought for and to keep pushing for dignity, fairness, and real economic opportunity for working families across our state. Together, we can build a more just and equitable California.”
AFSCME 3299 joins the long list of support Steyer has earned since the launch of his campaign, which includes the California Federation of Teachers, United Domestic Workers, California School Employees Association, the California Nurses Association, as well as Congressman Ro Khanna, Senator Henry Stern, Assemblymembers Mia Bonta, Isaac Bryan, Gregg Hart, Ash Kalra, Alex Lee, Chris Ward, and Rick Chavez Zbur.
